While investigating an active shooter incident in the area of Calumet Park, police were unable to locate the shooter, but did still manage to make a significant arrest after one of the subjects they encountered turned out to have multiple felony warrants for his arrest.
Late Tuesday night, just before midnight, officers with the LaGrange Police Department responded to the area of Union Street in reference to an active shooting incident in progress where one male was chasing another male through the park while shooting at him.
Officers arrived and made contact with a subject and asked about the gun shots, at which point the male stated ‘he was shooting at me.’
The victim stated he was unable to say where the shooting suspect was because he ducked down when the shooting first started.
The victim appeared to be very reluctant to speak to police, but did say he did not know the shooter. He was only able to describe the suspect as an unknown black male.
While being interviewed by police, the victim repeatedly stated he just wanted to leave leading officers to believe he was scared and may have known more than he let on.
Police were ultimately unable to locate the shooter, but while searching for the gunman officers made contact with a male within the park who initially advised his name was Christopher Cox.
The subject was then briefly detained until officers could verify his identity, at which point he began to walk away from police and acted as if he was looking for an escape route. After advising officers his real name was Christopher Walton, the subject fled on foot and ran down two blocks before being apprehended.
Walton was then taken into custody and later confirmed to have several active felony warrants for his arrest.
As a result, Walton, age 18, was arrested and transported to the Troup County Sheriff’s Office where he was booked into the jail and charged with Resisting Arrest and warrants for Burglary, Robbery by Force, and Aggravated Assault.
Walton is currently being held at the Troup County Jail where he was denied bond.
