Rayfield “Ray” J. Relihan

Mr. Rayfield “Ray” J. Relihan, 98, of LaGrange, GA passed away Wednesday, December 12, 2018 at Wellstar Hospice LaGrange. Mr. Relihan was born November 28, 1920 in Walpole, NH, son of the late Dennis and Catherine Relihan.  He graduated from Stevens High School in Claremont, NH and from Embry-Riddle University.  He was a U.S. Army Air Force veteran of World War II, serving in the Fourteenth Air Force as a communication specialist and air traffic controller. Mr. Relihan was Chief Engineer and part owner of WLBB in Carrollton, GA and also Chief Engineer in Cedartown, WGAA.  Then later was the Chief Engineer and radio announcer – better known as “The Park Avenue Hillbilly” with WTRP in LaGrange, GA.  In 1965, Mr. Relihan became the Chief Engineer of LaGrange Cable TV and then developed cable systems in Newnan, Thomaston, and Manchester.  He was the primary member of the National Association of Broadcast Engineers and the Georgia Television Association.  Mr. Relihan was the official weather man of Troup County for 25 years.  He was a charter member of the local Knights of Columbus (Fourth Degree), charter member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church since 1952, and a lifetime member of the Georgia Radio Museum and Hall of Fame. He was a devoted husband and loving father.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, John Dennis Relihan, and his wife of 56 years, Sarah Glanton Relihan. Survivors include his daughter, Nancy Relihan of LaGrange, GA. Mass of the Resurrection will be held 11:00 A.M. Monday, December 17, 2018 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church with Father Timothy A. Gadziala officiating.  Burial will follow in Shadowlawn Cemetery.  The Rosary will be said at 5:00 P.M. Sunday, December 16, 2018 at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, LaGrange, GA.  The visitation will follow from 5:30 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Flowers will be accepted or contributions may be made to St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Hospice LaGrange, or Florence Hand Home in memory of Rayfield J. Relihan. Thomas Lewis Matheny

Thomas Lewis Matheny, 80, of LaGrange, GA went to be with the Lord on Thursday, December 13, 2018 from Wellstar West Georgia Hospice. Mr. Matheny was born September 16, 1938 in LaGrange, GA to the late John Thomas Matheny and Mary Frances Potts Matheny. He retired from Duracell and was a faithful member of Faith Baptist Church. Mr. Matheny was also a member of First Baptist Church Merrymakers, Active Life of LaGrange and was a long time sponsor of Lighthouse Children’s Home in Costa Rica. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Thomas Richard “Ricky” Matheny; and two sisters, Erma Lee Thrower and Evelyn Thomas. Survivors include his wife of almost 62 years, Theresa Eudonice Yates Matheny; children, Elaine (Jimmy) Moore, Tony (Alisa) Matheny, and Jennifer (Troy) Martin; 12 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; sisters, Eula Mae Bowen, Bernice Bannister, Nellie Poppham, and Corene Usher; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. The Gathering of family and friends was from 1:00pm until 2:30pm prior to the service at Faith Baptist Church. The Celebration of Life service was held 2:30pm Sunday, December 16, 2018 Faith Baptist Church with Pastor Donald Yancey officiating. Burial followed in Shadowlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Lighthouse Children’s Home in care of Faith Baptist Church. John F. Burgoon

Mr. John F. Burgoon passed away on Monday at his residence. Graveside services were held Friday, December 14, 2018 at 2:00 pm at the Meadoway Gardens. Family and friends assembled at the graveside.

Georgie Nelle Ray

Mrs. Georgie Nelle Ray, age 81, of LaGrange, passed away on December 11, 2018 at her residence. Mrs. Ray was born on November 14, 1937 in Jeff Davis County to the late John Tapley and Juanita Riner Tapley. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Johnny Richard Ray, Sr.; daughter, Barbara Ray Swain; grandsons, David Adams and Timothy Ussery; sister, Johnnie Belle Findley; brother, Sammie Tapley; son in law, Norman Ussery. She is survived by her children: Sandra (Ricky) Adams, Joe Swain, Opal (Gene) Hogg, Nita (Toby) Jeffcoat, Jonna Ussery, J. Richard (Heather) Ray, Jr. and Trampas Ray; by her grandchildren: Gene (Ashley) Adams, Joseph (LeAnn) McNeal, Shauna (John) Riggs, Stacy (Thomas) Green, Brandon (Lyza) Jeffcoat, Thomas Ussery, Kathryn (Brandon) Parrott, Jonathan (Karen) Ussery, Rebekah Hogg, Ashley (Tommy) Chatham, Jennifer (Eric) Young, Christopher Hogg, JohnRichard Ray, WilliamTapley Ray, MeiLynne Ray and Angela (Tim) Blakley; and by her siblings: Kenneth (Maureen) Tapley, Frances (Robert) Floyd, Atha Richerts, Troy Tapley, Â Becky Stewart, Aubrey Tapley, and Tony (Karen) Tapley.  She is also survived by a host of great-grandchildren, a beloved extended family, and many dear friends. Funeral services were held on Saturday, December 15, 2018 at 11:00 am at the Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church with Minister Larry Bird officiating. Interment followed at Meadoway Gardens. Travis L. Herrington

Travis L. Herrington, age 68, of LaGrange passed away on December 16, 2018 at the WellStar West Georgia Hospice. He was born on December 16, 1950 to the late William L Herrington, Sr. and Mary Ellen (Travis) Herrington in LaGrange, GA. He graduated from LaGrange High School in 1968. He worked at Milliken & Company as a dye specialist and later worked in sales at Eastern Industrial Supply. Survivors include his wife, Sandra Herrington; daughters, Amy Carlan (Chris), Angie Estes (Gentry); brothers, William L. “Bill” Herrington, Jr. (Verlinda); Clark Herrington (Polly); sister, Ann Garrard (Bob); grandchildren, Avery Estes, Walt Carlan, Eliza Carlan; nieces and nephews; extended family and friends. A memorial service will be held at 12:00 noon on Saturday, December 22, 2018 at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church with Pastor Larry Bird and Buddy Forbus officiating. Family will receive friends from 11:00 – 12:00 at the church. Hollis Glen Upchurch

Mr. Hollis Glen Upchurch, age 84, of Thomaston, passed away on December 14, 2018 at his residence.  Mr. Upchurch was born on August 9, 1934 in Heard County.  He retired from Georgia Pacific.  He is preceded in death by his parents, Ales Glenn Upchurch and Eula Mae Green Upchurch; his birth mother, Ollie Green Upchurch; wife, Patty Stillwell Upchurch; his daughter, Stephanie Miller; sister, Harmel Tibbets; brother, Frank Upchurch. Survivors include his children and their spouses, Marty Upchurch (Peggy), Terrie Holcomb (Johnnie), Darlene Norred (Kevin) and Toni Hardy (Carl Lee); brothers, A.G. Upchurch; sisters, Doris Dorris (Alan), Barbara Preavy (Gary) and June Upchurch White; 20 grandchildren, 48 great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren; extended family and friends. Funeral services were held on Monday, December 17, 2018 at 3:00 pm at the Higgins Lagrange Chapel.  Entombment followed at Restlawn Memory Gardens.  Family received friends on Monday from 2:00 pm until service hour.


Tommy Kenneth Bartlett, Jr

Mr. Tommy Kenneth Bartlett, Jr., age 41, of LaGrange, passed away at his residence on December 15, 2018.  He worked for WellStar West Georgia Medical Center.  Mr. Bartlett was born on August 15, 1977 in LaGrange to Tommy Kenneth Bartlett, Sr. and Rita Diane Pattillo Bartlett.  His parents survive him as well as his wife, Cortney Brown Bartlett; children, Lydia Grace Bartlett and Avery Kenneth Bartlett; sisters, Candy Carson and her husband Jeff, Tammy Cox and her husband Wendell and Tressy Webb and her husband Jason; extended family and a host of friends.  Services will be held on Wednesday, December 19, 2018 at 3:00 pm at the Higgins LaGrange Chapel with Rev. Anthony Hovey officiating.  Family will receive friends on Wednesday at the funeral home from 1:00 until service hour.


Jennifer Flanagan

Jennifer Lynn Bloodworth Flanagan, 55,  of Tyrone, passed away on December 16, 2018. Jennifer is survived by her mother, Brenda Bond Bloodworth Templeton, and her husband David, of Ellenwood; her sister, Carol Bloodworth and her husband, Paul Springer, of Livermore, California; her brother, Edward Bloodworth, and his wife, Salika, of Centennial, Colorado; her nephew, William Springer, his wife, Elizabeth, and their daughter, Charlotte, all of Merced, California; and her nephew Daniel Springer, and his wife, Morgan, of Austin, Texas.  She was preceded in death by her father, Ernest Oliver Bloodworth, Jr.  Jennifer loved flowers, ‘I Love Lucy’, antique hunting, Bruno Mars, and her little dog Jack. She loved her family very much and was much loved in return.  The family will receive friends and family from 11:30-1:30 p.m. on Friday, December 21, at Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home in Hogansville, followed by a graveside service at 2:00 p.m. at the Luthersville Cemetery.
