Richard Avery Smallwood

Mr. Richard Avery Smallwood, Sr. age 76, of LaGrange, passed away on June 24, 2019 at the WellStar West Georgia Medical Center.  Mr. Smallwood was born on December 10, 1942 in Lanett, Alabama to the late Henry Grady Smallwood and Thelma Manning Smallwood.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five siblings. Mr. Smallwood retired from West Point Stevens, followed by working for the Troup County Board of Education as a bus driver for over 10 years. Survivors include his wife, Marie Bice Smallwood; son, Richie Smallwood and his wife Gayle; daughter, Tina Yearta and her husband Lane; brother, Billy Smallwood (Melba); sisters, Betty Broome and Faye Buffington; grandchildren, Kyle Smallwood, Scarlett Smallwood, Anna Rogers (Trey) and Courtney Barber; great grandchildren, Madisyn, Kayleigh, River, Averi and Silas; nieces, nephews and extended family.  Funeral services were held on Thursday, June 27, 2019 at 11:00 am at the Higgins LaGrange Chapel with Rev. Eddie Perry officiating.  Interment followed at Meadoway Gardens.  Family received friends on Wednesday evening from 6-8 pm at the funeral home.

Striffler-Hamby

Brandon Lee Jones

Brandon Lee Jones, 43, of LaGrange, GA passed away Monday, June 24, 2019 at Wellstar West Georgia Medical Center. Brandon was born January 31, 1976 in LaGrange, GA.  He was employed by J&J Lawn Service.  He was preceded in death by his father, Mickey Len Jones, grandparents, Alfred and Betty E. Pye and Rev. Henry R. and Sara L. Jones; uncles, David Pye and Wayne Jones, and father-in-law, Charles William Cummings. Brandon is survived by his wife, Melinda Jones; children, Christian (Nicole) Burdette, Sommer Cook, and Angel Fuller; mother, Sharon Jones (Harold) Fredriksen; brothers, Mike (Angie) Jones, Chris (Christie) Jones, and Scott (Kim) Jones; mother-in-law, Emily Cummings; sister-in-law, Melissa Donald; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Celebration of Life service were held 3:00 P.M. Thursday, June 27, 2019 in the Chapel of Striffler-Hamby Mortuary where Rev. Joel Scott and Rev. Jimmy McMillian officiated.  Burial followed in Meadoway Gardens Cemetery.  The gathering of family and friends was on Thursday from 2:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M. at the funeral home.

 

Betty Jo Steed

Mrs. Betty Jo Steed, 100, of LaGrange, GA passed away Tuesday, June 25, 2019 at Poplar Creek Assisted Living. Mrs. Steed was born October 26, 1918 in Gay, GA, daughter of the late William Joseph Smith and Jane Elizabeth Snow Smith.  She was a member of Rosemont Baptist Church and an avid gardener.  Mrs. Steed was a former member of the Oasis Club and past member of the Pine Needle Garden Club and the Cascade Heights Garden Club in Atlanta, GA.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Louis Steed, Sr. and a granddaughter, Joanna Elizabeth Steed. Mrs. Steed is survived by 3 children, Robert Louis (Claire) Steed, Jr., Jane Steed (Phil) Rogers, and William Joseph Steed; grandchildren, Robert Britt Steed, Nanci Rogers (Jimmy) McClendon, Molly Rogers (Adam) Talanczuk, Kiley Steed (Jamie) Cashwell, and Ashley Joseph (Brittany) Steed;  great grandchildren, Landan Cashwell, Camdan Cashwell, Brody Steed, Owen McClendon, Harry McClendon, Mattie Talanczuk, and Tia Talanczuk. Celebration of Life service will be 2:00 P.M. Saturday, June 29, 2019 in the Chapel of Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, LaGrange, GA with Rev. Max McCord officiating.  The gathering of family and friends will be in the Striffler-Hamby Mortuary Event Room immediately following the funeral service.  Burial will be at 4:30 P.M. in the Union Baptist Church Cemetery, St. Mark’s Community, Hogansville, GA.
