Betty Sue Houk (Phelps)

Mrs. Betty Sue Houk, of LaGrange, passed away on October 31, 2019. She was born in Jetson, Kentucky to the late Albert and Elsie Phelps. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Houk is preceded in death by her husband, Richard Houk; her son, Charles Jeffrey Green; her brothers, Charles Eugene Phelps and Leo Clinton Phelps. Mrs. Betty Sue Hoak is survived by her son, William “Bill” Dean Green (Jennifer Hoefer); her daughters, Sherry Burns (Gregory), Cheryl Basore, and Sandy Hayes; her grandchildren, Steven Lingenfelter (Laurie), Charles Joseph Green (Llewelyh Mars Green), Valerie Briggs (Phillip), Jeremy Thomas Ford, and Sarah Lynn Ford; her great grandchildren, Aubree Ford, Damon Ford, and Delaney Ford. The family received friends at Higgins LaGrange Chapel on Thursday, October 31, 2019 from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m.




Dr. Brooks Shelhorse

Dr. Brooks Shelhorse, 73, of Hogansville, passed away Monday, October 28, 2019 at Columbus Hospice. Born March 5, 1946 in Columbus, Dr. Shelhorse was the son of the late Bailey Brooks and Ruby Katherine Bray Shelhorse. He was a member of the Jordan High School Class of 1964 and received degrees from LaGrange College, LSU, Washington State, University of Evansville, and his Doctorate from Georgia State. He was a Mathematics and Computer Science professor at LaGrange College for 43 years and was a longtime member of Asbury United Methodist Church. Dr. Shelhorse was a lifelong fan of Edgar Rice Burroughs novels, especially Tarzan, and the singer known as “The World’s Greatest Entertainer”, Al Jolson. Survivors include his wife, Elaine Shelhorse of Hogansville; daughters and sons in-law, Annica and Ray Ritchie of Columbus and Llana and Dusty York of Hogansville; sisters and brothers in-law, Yvonne and Chip Camper of Ramstein AFB, Germany, Werdna and Ikie Martin and Carletta Shelhorse all of Columbus; brothers and sisters in-law, Max and Sharon Shelhorse of Monroe, Warren and Lynne Shelhorse of Syracuse, NY, and Glenn and Jennie Shelhorse of Cataula; grandchildren, Eli York, Scott York, and Aaron York; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Dejah Dian Shelhorse. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., Friday, November 1, in the Chapel of Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home in Hogansville. The Reverend Mike Ellison and Dr. Don Jolly will officiate and interment will be in Myrtle Hill Cemetery. The family received friends at the funeral home from 6 until 8 Thursday evening.


Bernice Knight Prescott

Mrs. Bernice Knight Prescott, 95, of Hogansville, passed away Wednesday, October 30, 2019, at LaGrange Nursing and Rehab. Mrs. Prescott was born February 6, 1924, in Haralson County, daughter of the late Earl David Knight and Clara Jane Brown Knight. A resident of Troup County since 1942, she was a dedicated pastor’s wife to her late husband during his sixty years of ministry as they served churches in LaGrange, Piedmont, AL, and Hogansville. She was a member of Bible Baptist Church. Survivors include her grandson, Shane Prescott; daughter in-law, Elaine Prescott; great-grandchildren, Shawn Prescott, Hope Prescott, Elizabeth Prescott, Katie Prescott; and a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Dr. R. C. Prescott; and her son, Judge L. Gwen Prescott. The funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Friday, November 1, in the Chapel of Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home in Hogansville. The Reverend Eddie Perry will officiate and interment will be in Shadowlawn Cemetery in LaGrange.The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1 until 2 Friday afternoon.




Mae Helen Hardy

Ms. Mae Helen Hardy was born July 12, 1950 to the late Willie B. Hill and Ollie Mae Hardy in LaGrange, Georgia. She graduated from Bethlehem Temple Christian Academy. Mrs. Hardy was formally employed by Wal-Mart and Duracell. On Saturday, October 26, 2019; Mae departed this life in LaGrange, Georgia. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Nate Hill; and grandmother, Willie Frank Hardy. She leaves to cherish her memories, her children: Victoria (Greg) Hall, Cynthia Hill, and Teresa Gates; grandchildren: NaTasha Hill, Kendra Hall, Greg Hall, Jr., sisters: Effie Edmondson, Mary Ann Hill, Ossie (Bobby) Foster; brothers: Johnny (Alberta) Hardy, Calvin Hill, Joel Poythress, Philip Foster, Jerome Edmondson, Tony Edmondson, Roy (Nikki) Edmondson, and Shad (Caprecia) Edmondson; sisters-in-law: Nannie (Eddie) Rhodes, Marsha (Marcia) Dansby, and Marie Cameron; aunt, Ida Ann Holloway; uncle, Richard (Catherine) Hill; special friend, Mr. Addis Trammell; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. The Celebration of Life Service will be Friday, November 1, 2019 at 2:00 PM at Bethlehem Baptist Church. Minister Josh McCamey will officiate. Interment will follow at Southview Cemetery. The family will be at their home at 210 North Barnard Avenue.




Charlie Poythress

Charlie Poythress, 85, of 717 Glenn Robertson Dr. passed on Sunday at WellStar Hospice Lagrange. Charlie “Bojay” Poythress the son on the late Joe and Essie Poythress was born in Lagrange. Funeral services with Military Honors will be held on Monday, 2pm at Saint Paul Baptist church with the Rev. Desmond Scaife officiating and Rev. Charlie Barsh, Eulogist. The interment will be in Meadoway Gardens Cemetery. Viewing will be on Sunday from 1pm-8pm at the funeral home.The family will receive friends at his home.
