The Troup Retired Educators awarded Troup High School student, Catherine Grace Benefield a $1,000 scholarship at their monthly meeting, Thursday, April 25, at Highland Country Club. The scholarship is in honor of Curmilla Furgerson who was an outstanding teacher in the LaGrange and Troup County School Systems.
Each year, a student who aspires to become a teacher is selected from one of the three area high schools. This year’s recipient explained that her desire to major in education is partly because of the influence of the educators in her family.
“My mom is a high school counselor, my father is a social studies teacher, and my aunt is an elementary school teacher. All three of them have given me personal advice and stories. They have shown me how to be kind, how to be understanding, and how to be compassionate. I want to be an example and teach lessons, instill trust, and talk to students about their lives”, she said.
Catherine is the daughter of Bridget and Jeff Benefield. She plans to attend Kennesaw State in the fall.
