For the fifth year in a row, Callaway Middle School is a part of the Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) initiative. You may hear students talk about it. You may hear staff talk about it. Now, the entire state of Georgia is talking about the PBIS successes that have taken place at CMS! So what exactly is it?
PBIS is an evidencebased, data-driven framework proven to reduce disciplinary incidents, increase a school’s sense of safety, and support improved academic outcomes according to the Georgia Department of Education (http://bit.ly/2kimzEu). Some fun facts about PBIS include: •More than 1,200 Georgia schools and 27,000 nationwide have been trained in PBIS.
•Schools that implement PBIS are gaining back instructional time that was previously lost to disciplinary concerns.
oCallaway Middle, has reduced days of In-School Suspension (ISS) by 63%, whereas Out of School Suspension (OSS) days were reduced by 49% from 2015-2018.
oAs a result of a 51% reduction in Office Discipline Referrals (ODRs), Callaway Middle School regained 67 instructional days!
•The PBIS team applies prevention strategies through data-driven behavioral analysis, as every member of the CMS team supports the school-wide, targeted, and even individualized interventions and supports.
•PBIS core tenets include: oMust teach appropriate behaviors oContinue to teach and reteach throughout the year oProvide feedback and acknowledgement of positive student behavior oUnnecessary discipline will be decreased oSchool atmosphere will be one of learning, security, and efficiency Want to know more?
